Hi! I’m Monique,

Cancer survivor and mom to two amazing children.

I am originally from the tropical island of St. Kitts-Nevis. I migrated to the Sunshine State when I was 18 years old. I am a certified Early childhood educator and have been teaching for over 12 years.

In my spare time, I listen to music. I love all music with classical music being my favorite genre. I love nature walks and enjoy painting and writing.

My life opened a whole new chapter when I was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer in 2018. I had two partial surgeries to remove cancerous nodules. The surgeon noted the cancer was more aggressive on the right side, and unfortunately, I woke up mute.

I was then diagnosed with Bilateral Vocal Cord Paralysis. This occurs when the nerve impulses to the voice box (larynx) are disrupted. This results in paralysis of the vocal cord muscles. It affects the ability to speak and breathe.

After a year of speech and swallow therapy, I am able to whisper and use different techniques to help me with swallowing and breathing difficulties. It's an ongoing process. I am able to utilize facial expressions, sign language, and the use of speaking speech devices that aid in my daily communication.

Life to me is a gift given and this disability is not my inability. I've gained a new voice. A voice in my writing! Life is an adventure, and I am learning to embrace the journey as I navigate "The Chapters of Life."
